PROOF IT GETS BETTER! BEYOND NORMAL: The Birth of Gay Pride, Now an iBOOK, eBOOK, and a PAPERBACK! Groundbreaking Memoir by Gale Chester Whittington

PROOF IT GETS BETTER! BEYOND NORMAL: The Birth of Gay Pride, Now an iBOOK, eBOOK, and a PAPERBACK! Groundbreaking Memoir by Gale Chester Whittington: TRUE BEGINNING OF GAY LIBERATION SAN FRANCISCO 1969.

January 12, 2011
I am proud to announce that my historical, triumphant, and humorous memoir BEYOND NORMAL: The Birth of Gay Pride is finally available as an iBook, a paperback, and an eBook! It can be purchased online at Booklocker.com (where three sample chapters can be previewed for free), Amazon, and Barnes and Noble, and it has been uploaded to the iBookstore. It can also be ordered from any brick and mortar store where books are sold via ISBN #978-1-60910-597-6. Ten years in the works, my autobiography about the true beginning of the militant Gay Liberation movement in 1969 San Francisco, contains over forty-five vintage photographs of brave activists fighting for equal rights at a time when homosexuality was still considered a mental illness by most of the world!

(UPDATE: Excellent news! My memoir BEYOND NORMAL: The Birth of Gay Pride has been named as a finalist for the prestigious 23rd Annual Lambda Literary Awards! http://www.lambdaliterary.org/awards/2011-finalists/ Results in New York City on May 26, 2011: http://www.lambdaliterary.org/awards/

And check it out! The San Francisco Examiner recommended my book in their Sunday Edition on January 16, 2011!
"Something to read
Beyond Normal
By Gale Chester Whittington ($17.95)
Subtitled 'The Birth of Gay Pride,' the memoir by an activist and journalist brings to light details of the militant, pre-Stonewall gay liberation movement in San Francisco in 1969.")

Photo of the April 1969 Vector magazine showing author Gale Chester Whittington on the cover. Vector was the official mouthpiece of the Society for Individual Rights (SIR) and this revolutionary issue contained articles written by Leo E. Laurence and Gale. Just one of many historical images in BEYOND NORMAL: The Birth of Gay Pride.

I wrote this book to set the record straight, because little about the pre-Stonewall militant gay movement in the San Francisco Bay Area has been detailed in print. While many brave activists have contributed to the cause before and since, a close look shows how the militant side of Gay Liberation actually began within the bowels of San Francisco a few months before the New York Stonewall uprising.

Photo used for the cover of BEYOND NORMAL: The Birth of Gay Pride, showing author Gale Chester Whittington and members of the Committee for Homosexual Freedom (CHF) picketing States Steamship Company (a.k.a. States Line), the San Francisco firm that fired Gale for being openly gay, in early April of 1969, three months before Stonewall. One of over forty-five historical images in the book. Picture courtesy of Marsha-Ann Woof Sebay-Hill.

The concept of coming out en masse as a way to enlighten and change the world was born in the hilly streets of the City by the Bay and championed by Gale Whittington and Leo E. Laurence, co-founders of the Committee for Homosexual Freedom (CHF). Indeed, the facts in this book show how a handful of fiery West Coast gay guerillas fanned the sparks that helped inspire participants at Stonewall to stand and fight openly for their rights, thereby passing along a torch that would ignite the movement to liberate gays and enlighten heterosexuals in countries everywhere!

My triumphant memoir chronicles my teenage suicide attempt and then moves on to the real beginning of the Gay Liberation movement, pre-Stonewall, in 1969 San Francisco, where I was fired for being openly gay. It’s creative non-fiction, written like a novel, with a conservative alter-ego’s thoughts inserted to keep it lively. CHF’s groundbreaking openly gay philosophy—coming out en masse as a way to enlighten and change the world—lead my comrades to crown me “Gale the Liberator.”

Quotes related to BEYOND NORMAL: The Birth of Gay Pride

Pre-Stonewall, Gale Chester Whittington’s historical memoir traces the 1969 gay civil rights movement as it unfolds through the eyes of an idealistic and romantic young man fresh from Denver. His group’s groundbreaking openly gay philosophy—coming out en masse as a way to enlighten and change the world—leads his comrades to crown him the “Rosa Parks of Gay Liberation” and “Gale the Liberator.”

“In late March (1969), States Line fired a young man named Gale Whittington simply because he was gay. This act spawned the first gay liberation organization in San Francisco, the Committee for Homosexual Freedom”—Charles Thorpe Archival Collections at the GLBT (Gay Lesbian Bisexual and Transgender) Historical Society of San Francisco in California

“(B)esides holding indisputable claim to the foundation of the old American homophile movement, the West Coast can with some justification date gay lib from the creation of its CHF (Committee for Homosexual Freedom), spring 1969, not from the Stonewall riots in June.”—The GAY MILITANTS by Donn Teal

“In the (picketing) process, the first...and...most productive...gay liberation group in the (San Francisco) Bay Area, the Committee for Homosexual Freedom (CHF) began to grasp what it might be like to live openly homosexual lives and to sense the tremendous potential for social change their new movement had begun to tap.”—Gay by the Bay, A History of Queer Culture in the San Francisco Bay Area by Susan Stryker and Jim Van Buskirk

"By far the most valuable aspect of BEYOND NORMAL and the one that drew me in as a reader was the personal account...Mr. Whittington had the good luck of living through interesting times and his perspective as a participant observer makes for a fun and fascinating read...Lots of material!"—Terence Kissack, Executive Director of the GLBT Historical Society in San Francisco

“I think BEYOND NORMAL is a good book and will add to the history of the gay movement.”—Vern Bullough, author of Before Stonewall: Activists for Gay and Lesbian Rights in Historical Context

Overnight Web Sensation Greyson Michael Chance so impressed talk show host Ellen Degeneres that she flew him to Hollywood to appear and perform on her show!

Photo of Greyson Michael Chance on The Ellen Degeneres Show yesterday. May 13, 2010 image.

One week ago, 12-year-old Greyson Michael Chance was living a typical life in Edmond, Oklahoma, where he enjoyed listening to his favorite band, Augustana, and playing the understudy in a local production of Oliver. But Fate had bigger things in store for the talented singer/song writer, as he has become the Web’s newest super star!

Picture of Greyson Michael Chance chatting with Ellen on The Ellen Degeneres Show yesterday. May 13, 2010 photo.

After recording a rockin’ rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” at a talent show for his sixth grade class, he uploaded it to Facebook and YouTube, without a clue as to what would happen next. In just a few short days the video received over 2 million views and overnight he became an Internet sensation! Word spread and now, in less than two weeks the video has received over ten million hits!

Even though he's only in the 6th grade, Greyson has shown an extraordinary talent for music. In addition to his cover of “Paparazzi,” he has written two songs of his own, “Broken Hearts” and “Stars.” He’s now working full time on his music career. Watch all three of these performances in videos at the base of this post.

It seems Ellen has a special talent for spotting rising stars. A few weeks ago, on April 21, 2010 she brought Lin Yu Chun (aka Eric Lin) to the US to sing “I Will Always Love You” and “Amazing Grace.” Lin was discovered on a Taiwanese singing show called Super Star Avenue, where he wowed the judges with an ethereal version of Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You."

Although Lin didn't win the million dollar prize, he did score a recording contract and has also become a YouTube sensation, where his video has received over ten million views as well. British papers have even crowned him the next Susan Boyle. Sony Music Entertainment said in a statement Thursday, May 13, 2010, that Lin Yu Chun's debut album, featuring Chinese and English songs, will be released in July. It quoted 24-year-old Lin as saying, "I still can't believe this is real."

Lin told Ellen he was bullied as a child and sang to "feel better about himself" and now, “Success is the best revenge!” Visit his blog here: http://www.lin-yu-chun.blogspot.com

BETTY WHITE ROCKS SNL SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE RATINGS 5-8-10! BREATHES NEW LIFE INTO OLD SHOW! 14 VIDEOS 8 PHOTOS UNSEEN VIDEOS! HOT IN CLEVELAND PREVIEW!

May 10, 2010.
WATCH AS BETTY WHITE RESUSCITATES SNL WITH A FRESH TAKE ON OLD SKITS AND PERFECT COMEDIC TIMING! TODAY WE BRING YOU 14 OF THE FUNNIEST SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE (SNL) CLIPS EVER, INCLUDING THREE THAT WERE NOT AIRED DUE TO TIME CONSTRAINTS! PLUS WE HAVE 8 PICTURES AND A PREVIEW OF BETTY WHITE’S NEW SHOW HOT IN CLEVELAND!
88 1/2 year-old Betty “Frickin’” White made history this weekend as the oldest host ever of Saturday Night Live, receiving rave reviews for her delivery and hilarity. Joined by returning cast members Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Molly Shannon, Maya Rudolph, Ana Gasteyer and Rachel Dratch, Betty stole the show in each and every skit.

Photo of Betty White and Will Forte in the "Lawrence Welk Cold Open" skit on this weekend's Saturday Night LIve (SNL). 5-8-10 image.

And to top it all off, SNL received its highest overnight ratings in 18 months ! Betty’s show received an 8.8 rating/21 share, according to Nielsen Media Research. That's the highest since Nov. 1, 2008, when Ben Affleck hosted and Republican presidential nominee John McCain appeared alongside Tina Fey as Governor Sarah Palin!

Picture of Betty White during the Saturday Night Live (SNL) monologue, which had the audience rolling in the aisles! 5-8-10 photo.

During the opening monologue, Betty noted she made her live TV debut in 1952 because they "didn't know how to tape things," adding "I don't know what this show's excuse is!"

Promotional image of Betty White with Jay-Z, the evening's musical performer on Saturday Night Live (SNL) 5-8-10 photo.

Betty “thanked” Facebook for its campaign to get her to appear on the show. "I didn't know what Facebook was, and now that I do know what it is, it sounds like a huge waste of time. I would never think that people on it are losers, but that's only because I'm polite.”

“At my age," she added, "if I want to connect with old friends, I need a Ouija board. Facebook just sounds like a drag. In my day, seeing pictures of people's vacations was considered a punishment. Yes we had poking, but it wasn't something we did on a computer. It was something you did on a hayride, under a blanket."

She did Scared Straight, NPR, Debbie Downer, Census, MacGruber, Joyologist, Sally O’Malley & Dotty O’Donghan and Bronx Beat to name a few. Watch all of the soon-to-be classic skits in the videos below. She claimed she was “scared to death” as she made the talks show rounds earlier in the week, but the nerves didn't show during her performance.

In the sketches, White played MacGruber's grandmother, Grandma MacIntosh and a senior citizen on "CSI: Sarasota" among others. Since it was a Mother's Day special, the skits also featured SNL alums Rachel Dratch, Tina Fey, Ana Gasteyer, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph and Molly Shannon. Fey assisted in the sketch about 2010 census while Gasteyer and Shannon partook in the sketch about baker Florence Dusty's new muffins.

It seems Fox/American Idol made another major faux paux last night and we’re not talking about the fact that they eliminated the better acts early this season, leaving us with less than stellar contestants.

Rather, we’re talking about their poor judgment in taking a performance from the hottest pop star on the planet and cutting it down from six and a half minutes to five without permission. Needless to say, Gaga is livid!

Picture of Lady Gaga performing her next single "Alejandro" on American Idol Season 9 Top 5 Eliminations Show with her shirtless male dancers. 5-5-10 photo.

Chosen by the readers of Time Magazine as 2010's Most Influential Artist on the Planet, her magic is not something Fox or anyone else should be messing with.

So today, we bring you both versions of the performance and we’d love to hear your comments about both!

Here’s how it went down: “This is a woman who's dominating the charts and pushing the pop-culture envelope," Ryan Seacrest told the audience as he introduced Lady Gaga. In a pre-taped performance, Lady Gaga took to the stage with a large group of shirtless male backup dancers.

Lady Gaga sang the newest single from her latest album The Fame Monster, a Spanish-influenced number called "Alejandro." She began at the piano with a bit of her mega-hit "Bad Romance."

Photo of Lady Gaga dancing while singing "Alejandro" on last night's American Idol Season 9 Top 5 Eliminations Show. Black lace body suit designed by Armani Privé. Styling by Nicola Formichetti. 5-5-10 image.

Dressed in a black lace body suit, cape, and veil designed by Armani Privé, Gaga surrounded herself with a hot gaggle of shirtless dancers. Halfway through the performance, she dropped the cape and began writhing on the floor. Her American Idol performance was taped after last week's elimination show.

Check out this short article on Lady Gaga written by Cyndi Lauper:
I first heard the name Lady Gaga through a mutual friend. He couldn’t stop talking about her. Then I heard her music, and I thought, Wow, I love this kid.

Image of Lady Gaga rolling around on the floor during the middle of her "Alejandro" performance on last night's American Idol Season 9 Top 5 Eliminations Show. 5-5-10 picture.

People forget how young she is. She is barely 24 — much younger than I was when I became famous. It’s very tough being where she is right now. People are pulling her in all different directions. It’s hard to navigate that. Try to imagine what you were like at her age, if you still can. I can’t wait to see how she grows and what she decides her next act will be.

Picture of Lady Gaga singing "Alejandro" on Fox's American Idol last night. Black lace body suit custom designed by Armani Privé. Styling by Nicola Formichetti. 5-5-10 photo.

She only has two albums out, but already she is inspiring other artists to go further in their own work. When I see somebody like Gaga, I sit back in admiration. I’m inspired to pick up the torch again myself. I did an interview with her once, and she showed up with a sculpture on her head. I thought, How awesome. Being around her, I felt like the dust was shaken off of me. I find it very comforting to sit next to somebody and not have to worry that I look like the freak. She isn’t a pop act, she is a performance artist. She herself is the art. She is the sculpture. END.

Extra’s Terri Seymour caught up with Lady Gaga to talk about her new video, following Gaga’s racy performance on American Idol Wednesday night, May 5, 2010. Lady Gaga is currently prepping a video for her new single, “Alejandro,” and tells Terri, “I’m shooting this video with Steven Klein. I’m so excited, but like all of my videos, I don’t know what it’s going to look like until it’s finished.” The pop star is constantly on the go — so how does she keep it up? “I’m really not that tired. Of course, I get tired… it’s my passion for my fans,” she said. “It’s their messages, they send me these beautiful videos… I must have thousands of beautifully laminated books with stickers, photos, sketches, poetry, they call me Mother Monster now.”
Her Ladyship also reveals that although she sings about her “Poker Face,” she “sucks” at playing poker and that her inspiration for the song came from a party. “One of the inspirations from Poker Face was these parties I used to hold on Sundays at my friend’s house in Brooklyn, and all the boys would get together and play Texas Hold ‘Em and I’d make margaritas and spaghetti for everybody. Believe it or not I’m an excellent cook, so no, I suck at poker,” she said. May 5, 2010.
